紐時引述美資深政官員說，從中國最近針對美對台軍售的嚴厲抗議動作看來，兩人通話後可能引發的潛在餘波值得關注。雖然中國第一時間還未立即回應，但相信川普、蔡總統兩人通電話對中國是更大的挑釁。
報導指出，電話中，蔡總統對川普當選表達祝賀，兩人也討論台美之間的經濟、政治與安全等緊密關係，川普同時對蔡總統今年初當選「台灣的總統」（president of Taiwan）表示祝賀。
